The spiritual and the physical worlds are both real and created by God with a purpose. In Genesis 1:1, the Bible says, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth,” which means both realms came from God. They weren’t just random or separate things. By creating both realms, God shows that the spiritual world is just as real as the physical world we experience every day. This means things like consciousness, faith, prayer, and spiritual experiences are not just “extra” parts of life—they’re central. N.T. Wright, a well-known theologian, has pointed out that “the invisible world is real, and it’s not detached from the physical; it’s intimately connected” (Simply Christian).
The Trinity didn’t just create the world and then leave it alone. They’re constantly working in both the natural and spiritual realms, interacting with us in real time. God is actively engaged in the ongoing story of both realms. This matters because it shows that God cares about what happens here on earth and in the spiritual world. The Trinity are not distant but are always involved in the lives of Their creation. We can interact with Them through prayer, experience Their guidance, and trust that They are paying attention to what happens in both realms.
Our lives are connected to something bigger. Since God created both the heavens and the earth, it means that what we do on earth has spiritual importance. The choices we make, how we live, and how we treat others are all connected to the spiritual world.
As Jesus taught in Matthew 6:10, “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” The spiritual realm is not some faraway place—it directly affects how we live here and now. We are designed to live in a way that reflects God’s values, bringing agape love, grace, mercy, morality and truth into the world around us.
The natural world can be difficult, filled with pain, suffering, and confusion. But because God created both the heavenly spiritual realm and the earth, we know that this life isn’t all there is. There’s more that we don’t always see.
The spiritual and physical realms are real, deeply connected, and full of meaning. God is involved in both realms and your life is part of a bigger picture, one that will ultimately give you hope, a future and a purpose.
