God the Trinity planned, out of Their inexhaustible agape love, to have human sons and daughters before They even created the universe.
This helps us understand who God is, our value as human beings, and what the bigger purpose of life and history is.
Firstly, God is a relational being. The Bible tells us that “God is agape love” (1 John 4:8), and agape love always wants to be shared. If God the Father wanted a family from the beginning, it means He created us because He wanted to be our father. C.S. Lewis once said, “God is love, and that means God is relational—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, eternally existing in perfect love. Creation is the overflow of that love” (Mere Christianity). This means the whole point of our existence is a relationship with God the Father, where He is our loving Father and we are His beloved children.
God the Father’s plan is for all of us to be His children, but we get to choose whether to remain intimately connected with the family in which we belong. This makes the relationship even more meaningful because God the Father’s agape love isn’t forced upon us — we get to freely choose it.
If God had this plan from before the beginning of time, that means you and I are part of a huge, beautiful purpose. We’re not just accidents or afterthoughts. Athanasius, a famous Christian theologian, once said, “The Word was made man so that we might be made divine” (On the Incarnation). This means that God became a human being so that we might become like God.
So there’s a bigger story going on. History isn’t random—it’s all heading toward God’s plan of having a divine family. The Bible talks about this in Ephesians 1:4-5, saying that God chose us “before the foundation of the world” to be Their sons and daughters. This means that everything—our lives, the world, the universe—has a direction. God the Trinity’s plan from the beginning has been to share Their agape love with human beings in a family relationship, and They’re inviting us to be really close family members, instead of acting like distant relatives.
You are infinitely valuable, your life has great meaning and you have a wonderful purpose, to live in a close relationship with God who truly and deeply loves you.
